2nd Annual Childcan Day to Remember Charity Golf Tournament was held in
Wardsville on August 13 and in Arkona on Saturday August 20th.
These tournaments were a day of celebration and remembrance to honour the lives of all people especially children, who are battling cancer or who have lost their battle.
ChildCan is a registered Canadian Charity that assists families through the crisis of having a child treated for cancer. ChildCan does not receive funding from the Canadian Cancer Society or the United Way. Each year we have approximately 65 children diagnosed locally (Southwestern Ontario) with some form of cancer. ChildCan helps these families with some day-to-day tangibles: In hospital support programs such as Coffee Talk. One day each week we host a coffee time for the families providing them with fresh fruits, vegetables and of course coffee. For families that are inpatient this is a much anticipated social 'outing' without having to leave the floor. For the families visiting the day unit for treatment, this is an opportunity to connect with other families traveling a similar road. A constant supply of new movies, games, toys, and magazines. When a child has cancer, they often have many days, weeks and even months of continuous stays in the hospital. Psycho-educational assessments for those children who receive cranial radiation or children with high risk disease who receive higher doses of a certain chemotherapy drug. A School Reintegration program. It is essential that children with cancer feel as normal as possible. It is imperative that their school experience continues to be a positive and supportive part of their lives, especially while undergoing treatment. This is a brief outline of how ChildCan helps these precious children, and their families. All the people who either golfed or sponsored this event helped this worthwhile cause by helping these families. Thank you in advance for your consideration of assisting ChildCan and these very special children in their battle against cancer.
Hightlights of Wardsville’s Day:
Hockey superstar Marcel Dionne golfed with Marty / Brenda Vanderselt (Corvan Roofing), Macia / Craig White (Homematics), Dan / Linda Forget and Henry / Allyson Otten. Marcel’s presence all but ruined Allyson’s ability to hit the ball with any accuracy.
Co-MC’s Mike Rombouts got a nipple ring and Carry Rutherford got bellie button rings thanks to Linda Forget’s friends
Dave Dobinson (Wellington Gardens) drummed up business when his donated water falls / rock garden sold to highest bidder Ron / Jackie Valotaire and Marcel Dionne asked him to put one in for him,
Maryala Gallagher president of Childcan spoke about what Childcan is,
Doug Francis came through in the pinch to drive the balloons down to the course when we found of they were left in Delaware,
Maria Francis (Parmalat) was high bid on the weekend away at the Elmhurst Inn - a well deserved break after co-chairing the events this year.
Winner of the 36” flat screen TV donated by Discover Energy Services was Cathy & Gavin Tanner (Stewart Overhead Doors).
Ron Horvat (head greenskeeper at Wardsville) was fourtunate 2x that day – first he was lucky not to get a speeding ticket racing home from preparing the greens in the morning only to catch the bus to go back to the course for the tournament and 2nd he was winner of 50/50 draw.
Best dressed group was Su & Tony Straatman, Nancy Nowicki and Teresa Blunt who had green T shirts on in support of Kaitlyn Rombouts who is completing her a stem cell transplant in Toronto Sick Kids hospital.
Highlights of Arkona’s Day:
The $1000 prize for a hole in one (sponsored Dr. Maurice Butchey) was nearly won when Casey Rombouts put a ball within 6” of the hole on his first shot.

3 generations of Williams from Watford worked at the golf tournament in Arkona. Carole Williams volunteered with organizing and taking pictures for the Watford Guide Advocate, her daughter Lynne Faulds was stationed on the 3rd hole running the refreshment cart and Carole’s grandson ??? was working as the assistant to the club pro.
Dave Dobinson (Wellington Gardens) donated another water falls / garden which was bought up by Mike Rombouts.
The mulligans that Leo Boere, Jeff Soetemans, Glen App and Dave Bastiaansen went to waste as they dumped 8 consecutive shots into the pond on the 3rd hole.

2004 Day to Remember
Golf Tournament Results
WOW! It’s hard to
believe but it has been 3 months since the 1st Annual Day to
Remember Golf Tournament. I would like to start off by, again,
thanking all of the people for
their excellent support and all their hard work and dedication to make Aug
27, 2004 the success that it was.
The following is a quick summary of our 2004 accomplishments:
We started planning the tournament in June and had the golf day on Aug 27 - 11 short weeks.
Initial Goals: bring awareness to ChildCan, have 100 golfers. Raise $5000. Have fun.
Achievements: Estimated handed out 500 sheets, collected 300+ prizes, had 152 golfers, had a blast, raised $13,800 and raised awareness about ChildCan, only 1 person hurt.
Got excellent support from Arkona Fairways, Watford Guide (newspaper), Terra Overholt (New PL) & Lorren Hottie (Bob FM).
Got terrific feedback from participants and people that would like to be involved next year.
Golfers like the treat bags, shot gun start, getting a team picture, the meal, the prizes, the auction items.
Terrific speech from Lisa Howe and Paige Thompson - helped to give event meaning.
Not to scare anyone but I am in the midst of planning for the 2nd Annual 2005 tournament.
Goals:
Bring further awareness to Childcan. Have 100 golfers @ 2 courses. Raise $10,000 @ each course. Have fun. Improve on advertising. Get more volunteers. Get more corporate sponsors - 2 per course x $1000+. Have golfers fund raise $25 - $100 each. Get celebrities / sport heroes to donate / come out.
Without your support
the 2005 tournament will not be a success – many hands make light work. I
hope I can count on all of you in same way or another for these days as this
is such a worthwhile cause!
